NYC Public Workspaces – Science, Industry and Business Library

January 2, 2025 by Jeff

Since finishing my batch at the Recurse Center, I’ve been making an effort to seek out and visit interesting publicly available workspaces in the city to work and study while I’m looking for a job. These are mainly public libraries, but also private libraries, coffee shops and privately owned public spaces.

The first of which I’ll describe (although the not the first I’ve visited) is the Science, Industry and Business Library, which is a part of the New York Public Library system. This is a very nice set of spaces in midtown Manhattan and has pretty good hours. There are plenty of seats with supportive chairs and power outlets on the street-level floor and lower floor.

There were multiple men sleeping and snoring in my vicinity, but with some noise cancelling headphones this is not a problem. The lower floor does not get any natural light, but with the dreary weather today this is not an issue and the first floor may be a bit better.

Lastly, this library does seem to have a specific focus around jobs and industry, given the name. I saw a flier with an extensive list of free public events, some of which actually looked interesting. Overall, recommended!
